meet the founder
hi, I’m clara
Founder, designer, maker, and lifelong lover of all things vintage, feminine, whimsical and nostalgic.
The story of Six Acre Meadow
I started this business because I missed the creative freedom I had at university. After graduating with a Fashion Design degree in 2007, I found myself in internships and early roles that were far from creative such as making teas, photocopying, filing and researching, which I didn’t mind but I desperately needed a hands-on outlet again, so I returned to making things simply because I wanted to.
I opened my Etsy shop back when almost no one knew what Etsy was, selling handmade clothing, notebooks, pouches, and vintage jewellery. I had no branding, pricing knowledge, or professional photography, just the joy of turning ideas into reality. Many of those early items, from hand-torn, ribbon-bound notebooks to upcycled garments, were imperfect, but people still loved them. That early encouragement shaped everything and gave me the drive to continue working on these projects at nights and the weekends, as I nurtured my Fashion Design career in the day.
Over time, my work evolved but the heart behind it stayed the same: creating what I love, not what trends dictate. That same drive to experiment fuels my upcycled dresses, whimsical pouches, and other pieces. I was making for the ‘joy of creation’ rather than “what will sell” which was the main goal working for other fashion brands which heavily diluted down my ideas.
By 2019, I had reached the Head of Design position at a small brand but some restructuring gave me the opportunity to re-evaluate what I wanted to do with my life and so I decided to leave my full-time fashion design career behind me. I was also extremely frustrated with the wastefulness of the industry (the more senior I became, the more I saw) so I trusted my gut and turned my 12-year hobby into a business. Soon after, boutiques were stocking my dresses and small businesses were commissioning my pouches. That was the confirmation I needed: creativity could sustain a life I wanted and bring joy to me, and others!
The inspiration behind the name
Six Acre Meadow is named after the riverside meadow where Sir John Everett Millais painted Ophelia. The painting is one of my lifelong inspirations…romantic, whimsical, nature-filled, and the meadow itself represents the softness, nostalgia and dreaminess I aim to infuse into everything I create.
It felt like the perfect name for a brand built on imagination, femininity and nostalgia.
What I create
Today, Six Acre Meadow includes:
handmade pouches in a range of styles and sizes
custom and white-label pouch designs for small businesses
tea towels and other homeware
reworked and upcycled vintage pieces
small-batch clothing and accessories made from remnant fabrics
whimsical lifestyle goods made to last
How it’s made
Everything is created in my home in one-off or small batches. Longevity is at the heart of every design. I believe that products should be circular, kept in use for as long as possible, repaired when needed, and made thoughtfully from the start.
While sustainability now has its own dedicated page on my website, it remains woven into every step: I choose remnant, leftover, and repurposed fabrics wherever possible and package orders with biodegradable and/or recyclable materials.
Philosophy & Inspiration
My background in Fashion Design, combined with my huge affection for vintage aesthetics, medieval romance, and feminine detailing shapes everything I make. My most personal designs such as my upcycled dresses, are created intuitively rather than strategically. They aren’t designed for a specific occasion or customer; they’re made from imagination and feeling.
That same spirit inspired one of my favourite career moments: a customer wearing my imperfect, hand-sewn dress (named ‘Isolde’) for her wedding. It reminded me that sincerity resonates more deeply than perfection ever will.
The Isolde dress is such a big reminder that I need to let intuition guide me and make things that I hope people will love and use for years to come.
